Promising Young Woman and Sofa Queens Episode 5 "Iced Capps and Sass"

Best Film of the Year:

Last night I had the privilege through The Hollywood Reporter to watch a screener of PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, written and directed by Emerald Fennell and starring one of my favourite actresses, Carry Mulligan.

THIS IS A MUST WATCH. I can’t say this enough. Emerald is a force to be reckoned with and wrote such a raw, real and immediate story that I think 99% of women identifying people can relate to. Also Mulligan is so grounded, calm and just such a force onscreen.

A young woman, traumatized by a tragic event in her past, seeks out vengeance against those who crossed her path.

Female Vengeance Genre

The narrative of women seeking vengeance has been on my radar now for the past 8 years. Since watching ANGRY INDIAN GODDESS, MADAME BOVARY and LADY MACBETH, I’ve seen more and more exalted female voices coming to the forefront and telling real stories from a perspective that is often not taken seriously.

Sofa Queens Episode 05

The idea of “boys will be boys” is the most toxic throw away statement. And what really again drew me to the SOFA QUEENS web series project, was the two episodes that touched on this very relevant and important issue.

Episode 05, “ICED CAPPS AND SASS,” follows Lianne and Pat as they witness a stranger pressuring their girlfriend to have sex with them. The two sit down with the young woman and tell her that:

Your body is your right. And you have the right to choose what you do. If you are not ready, you’re not ready!
— Pat (played by Shanice Bowrin)

One of the messages I learned from PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN and working on this SQ Episode, is the power of friendship and the need to give women identifying people the chance to tell THEIR story and to in turn, honour and BELIEVE their story.

Thank you Emerald for telling this story and for being so bold and honest!
